Buying a new house is exciting, whether it’s your first home purchase or you’re downsizing after spending decades in your home. What’s less exciting is actually moving into your new place.

Fortunately, there are ways to make moving simpler and more affordable — as long as you plan ahead.

Are you planning to move in the near future? You could save time and money with these four strategies.

  1. Time your move right. Moving companies tend to be busiest in the spring and summer, on weekends and at the beginning and end of the month. If you can time your move around these peak times, you’ll find more moving companies with availability and save money.
  2. Get creative with your supplies. Buying packing supplies can get incredibly expensive. Instead, you can see if local stores or your neighbors have boxes you could use. You can also use towels, linens, curtains and clothes (that you’re already moving anyway) as packing materials to keep dishes and other delicate items safe.
  3. Declutter first, then pack. There’s no point in paying to move items you no longer need or use. Before you pack, donate or trash any clothes, furniture, decor and other items you haven’t used in a while. If you can cull your belongings significantly, you’ll have less to pack and may be able to use a smaller, less expensive truck.
  4. Shop around for movers. You don’t have to go with the first moving company you find. Compare the costs and services of several different companies, and ask around or check reviews to ensure your items will be safe.

Get in touch if you’re ready to begin looking for your next home — or if you need a recommendation for a trusted moving company.
